Fire Hydrant Maintenance Method Statement
Hydrants shall be subject to a periodic test / inspection, the intervals of these to be no more than annual. The relevant factors such as the location and likely use of the hydrant must be taken into account when determining the intervals between tests.
Periodic test and/or inspection:
- Make a visual inspection of the hydrant pit, frame, cover, the surface surrounding the hydrant and the frost valve if fitted. The hydrant indicator plate should also be checked.
- a) After checking that a suitable washer is fitted, fit a suitable standpipe to the outlet.
b) Fit a 25m length of hose to the standpipe.
c) Fit the pressure and flow meter to the hose.
d) Fit a 2 - 5m length of hose to the pressure / flow meter.
e) Fit a branchpipe or diffuser nozzle set in the 'on' position to the short length of hose.
- The person manning the flow meter must also be in control of the nozzle.
- The person manning the hydrant on receiving a signal from the person manning the nozzle and meter should then partially open the valve to allow a small amount of water to flow. When the water has started to flow through the nozzle, the valve should be opened fully to allow for a 'flow' reading to be taken at the meter.
- When the person manning the meter has taken the flow reading he should then shut the nozzle and take the 'pressure' reading for 10 seconds.
- While the water is shut of at the nozzle the person manning the hydrant should inspect the various joints for any signs of leakage.
- The hydrant should then be shut off, the meter, hoses and nozzle disconnected and the water be removed from the hoses.
- The standpipe should be then be removed from the hydrant and the cover replaced.
- The meter readings and any repairs that may be needed, should then be noted.
Note: Nothing shall be kept or placed near fire hydrants in such a manner that
would prevent the hydrant from being immediately discernible or prevent
immediate access to it. A minimum of 1 meter clear space shall be maintained
around the hydrant.
