Dry Risers and Fire Hydrants
Dry Rising Mains
A Dry Rising Main is a system of valves and pipework which enables
the Fire Service to pump water on to the upper floors of a building.
Dry Risers will be found in buildings over 18 metres above ground
level.
The Diskin Fire annual maintenance service program to B.S. 5306-1:2006
includes:
-
Visual Inspection and Cleaning of all Inlet, Landing & Pressure
Release Valves:- The Check List items include:- Signage, Valve Door,
condition and suitability of instantaneous coupling & washer.
- Volumetric Pressure Testing to 10 Bar for 15 minutes, checking
each valve on two occasions, noting individual findings
- Completion
of Maintenance Report / Certificate
If any building under your management has rising mains, and in case
you are not already aware, we draw your attention to the following:
- Where fitted, fire fighting mains in high rise and high life risk
buildings are the primary installation for the Fire Brigade to take
effective control of serious fires. Should fire fighting mains fail
in a fire situation through lack of regular maintenance, lives and
property will be put at un-necessary risk.
- The British Standards 5306 Part 1 outline the procedures for six-monthly
inspection and annual wet pressure testing of dry and wet rising fire
mains, to be carried out by competent Persons and stresses the importance
of regular maintenance of fire fighting equipment.
- Legislation requires that fire appliance equipment should be regularly
maintained and kept in full working order. Neglect in this area, by
those responsible for the safety of the equipment, could constitute
criminal liability, which may result on conviction, in a heavy fine
or prison sentence.
Most building insurance policies carry wording which place the onus
on the policyholder to maintain fire appliance equipment in the working
order and there is a requirement that tests of fire equipment are
carried out at least every twelve months to ensure it is in working
order. Failure to comply could invalidate cover.
