The British Standards 5306 Part 1 outline the procedures for six-monthly
inspection and annual wet pressure testing of fire hydrants, to be
carried out by competent persons and stresses the importance of regular
maintenance of fire fighting equipment.
Legislation requires that
fire appliance equipment should be regularly maintained and kept in
full working order. Neglect in this area, by those responsible for
the safety of the equipment, could constitute criminal liability,
which may result on conviction, in a heavy fine or prison sentence.
Most building insurance policies carry wording which place the onus
on the policyholder to maintain fire appliance equipment in the working
order and there is a requirement that tests of fire equipment are
carried out at least every twelve months to ensure it is in working
order. Failure to comply could invalidate cover.
